It’s important to note that if you decide to get these surgical treatments in Iran’s specialized clinics, you will be offered the most up-to-date services with a low cost. Thus, you can save considerable amount of money while traveling to this beautiful country for resolving all the issues related to your health.

What is Angioplasty?

Your heart’s arteries may become blocked or narrowed if cholesterol, cells, or other substances are collected in the area. This problem reduces blood flow to your heart and causes chest discomfort. Sometimes a blood clot might suddenly form or completely block the blood flow which leads to a heart attack.

In such cases, doctors use angioplasty to open blocked arteries and restore normal blood flow to your heart muscle. The blocked artery will be opened by inflating a tiny balloon in it. After angioplasty, symptoms of blocked arteries, such as chest pain and shortness of breath will completely disappear. Angioplasty can also be conducted during a heart attack to quickly open a blocked artery and reduce the amount of damage to your heart.

Who Can Benefit From Angioplasty?

Individuals who suffer from blockages in their heart arteries may require angioplasty if they are having lots of discomfort in their chest or are at risk of a heart attack. Your doctor might choose angioplasty as a treatment when medications or lifestyle changes have not been enough to enhance your heart health or if you have extreme chest pain.

It’s important to note that angioplasty isn't an effective solution for everyone. If the main artery that brings blood to the left side of your heart is narrow or you have weak heart muscle, many diseased blood vessels, diabetes, and multiple blockages, coronary artery bypass surgery might be a better option. In coronary artery bypass surgery, the blocked part of your artery is bypassed using a blood vessel from another part of your body. Your physician’s final decision highly depends on the severity of your heart disease and overall health condition.

Procedure

The whole process is typically done in about one to three hours. Undoubtedly, the preparation and recovery may add much more time. Most patients have to stay in hospital overnight for observation.

In the beginning of the procedure, your doctor will numb a spot on your groin or arm and inserts a small tube into an artery. While watching it on an X-ray screen, the doctor moves the catheter into the artery. Afterwards, a very thin wire is threaded through the catheter and across the blockage. Over this wire, a catheter with a thin, expandable balloon on the end will be passed to the blockage.

The balloon is inflated. It pushes plaque to the side and stretches the artery open, so blood can flow more easily. This action may be done more than once. Finally, the physician takes out the balloon and catheters. Now the artery has been opened and your heart will get the blood it needs.

Angioplasty is frequently combined with the permanent placement of a small wire mesh tube called a stent to help prop the artery open and decrease its chance of narrowing again. While some stents are coated with medication to help keep your artery open, others are not.

Recovery

If angioplasty is performed through the leg, you should lie on your back for some hours. During this period, doctors and nurses check for any signs of bleeding or chest discomfort. Aspirin or other medicines are usually prescribed to help prevent bleeding. Nevertheless, if the procedure is performed through the arm, you won’t have to remain in bed. Generally, it’s better to ask someone to take care of you after the procedure since the more you rest, the better you will be. For the first two days after the procedure, heavy lifting or doing strenuous physical activities are forbidden. Moreover, you mustn’t eat or drink anything except clear liquids until the groin sheath is removed. When you are permitted to eat, you’ll have to follow a heart-healthy diet approved by your doctor. Learning about the risk factors is also important because it helps you keep your heart healthy. After a week, you can get back to your daily activities.

The Results

Coronary angioplasty increases blood flow through the previously narrowed or blocked coronary artery and eases your chest pain significantly.

To keep your heart healthy after an angioplasty, you must:

  • Stop smoking
  • Lower your cholesterol levels
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Control high blood pressure
  • Do exercise regularly

Another important issue must be explained in this regard. Having angioplasty and stenting doesn't necessarily mean that your heart disease goes away. You should live a healthy lifestyle and take medications prescribed by your doctor to get rid of your heart-related problems.
